If you have a cat, you probably have a litter box for them to go in. Sometimes you cat may end up peeing outside of the box. Your cat is not doing this to be spiteful, but it can be a medical condition. Cats prefer to pee in loose gravel or soft dirt. That is why cat litter is in the box. You do not have to train them to go there you just have to show them.
What is wrong when you cat pees outside the box.
When your cat starts to pee outside of the cat box, you should take into consideration possible illnesses. Some medical problems make cats produce more urine than normal (i.e., Kidney failure, and diabetes militus). Your cat may have problems that make them want to go pee frequently (e.g. feline interstital cystitis, bladder stones, and urinary tract infection). These problems give the cat a sense that they cannot wait to find the litter box and just goes.
What should I do?
The first thing a cat owner should do when their cat is peeing outside of the box makes an appointment with their veterinarian. According to Pet MD, the veterinarian will perform a full physical with your cat. They will take labs such as urine and blood for study. Depending on the results will determine if more tests need to be run such as X-rays and more blood work.
What if your cat has a clean bill of health from the Veterinarian?
If you cat has a good clean bill of health, then you need to look into the environment and behavior. Cats could avert from using the litter box for some reasons such as:
- A box that contains a different type of litter from the one the cat is familiar.
- Litter is containing a lot of strong perfumes.
- A box with high sides, making it difficult for the cat to get in and out of it. A disabled, sick, or arthritic cats are most affected by this.
- A covered box that is too dark and small making it uncomfortable for cats to enter and move around inside.
- A bad experience associated with the box, like being attacked by a housemate while inside.
Cats are allowed to peeing on the rug, or the floor will seem normal to them. Owners need to train their cats early in using the litter box, or it could be a problem later in the cat’s life.
